We go and sit in the carseat in the van. I only had to do that once.
Ah yes, the old take me out and discipline me so that I can get out of here, trick!
Here's what worked for us, make it very unpleasant for them to go out! It's different what that is for each child. Our one hate to be left alone so we put him in the carseat alone and then go back in church. He doesn't know it but we watch from the window to make sure he's ok and it doesn't take long till he is good and ready to sit back in church.
For others we have had to use the rod only a few times for them to decide it was much better to behave in church than to be removed.
